A Little Star Power

If you live here, you tend to take Notre Dame Football Weekends for granted. I mean, this is our home - we live here, we work here, our kids play sports - just like every other city across America. BUT, on football weekends, we get invaded by hundreds of thousands of people and each weekend, some celebrities find their way here. During the years I worked on campus, I've seen quite a few - Phil Donahue, George Wentz (Norm from "Cheers"), Amy Grant, Julia Roberts, Vince Vaughn and actually met some - including Regis Philbin (more than once), and Ned Beatty and Sean Astin (during the filming of "Rudy").

At Friday night's Pep Rally, Jon Bon Jovi shows up with his little boy - sporting a Notre Dame t-shirt and doing his best to blend in with the fans. Win or lose, the Irish seem to pull in the fans - even the famous ones.

Tailgate Serenades

We're never at a loss for some tailgate serenading when it comes to this bunch. Of course, I'm sure a little alcohol is necessary to keep them in tune.

In Honor Of the Upcoming Weekend......

Our niece (Annie) and nephew (Alex) are coming into town for the weekend. Alex finds his way up here every fall, but this will be Annie's first time to tailgate - Notre Dame style. So, in honor of their visit, and the ND/Purdue rivalry, and a forecast of sunshine and warm temps, here's a little something to get us in the mood. This song always gives me goosebumps. We hear it on the local radio stations during the week. IPods and CD players are pumping this throughout the parking lot tailgates on Saturdays. It never gets old.

HERE COME THE IRISH!!!

Irish Win!!

Today went on record as having the most rain in the history of South Bend - 6+ inches!!! Didn't bother the Irish as they laid a whoopin' on the Wolverines of Michigan - 35 -17. Sorry Irish - I opted for my dry house, but I cheered very loudly and you must have heard me!!

Nothing Quite Like It.....

While tailgating on Saturday morning, we noticed two Navy jets doing what appeared to be a "practice" fly over. A few hours later, we were in our seats in Notre Dame Stadium - actually, we were standing and singing the National Anthem - when Bob leaned over to me and pointed to the south. Perfectly synchronized to the music, they flew over just as we sang "the Land of the Free and the Home of the Brave". That will put a lump in your throat on ANY given day!!

A Good Zoom

It's nice to have a camera with a good zoom - especially when you're sitting in the last row at the very top of Notre Dame Stadium. Of course, a steady hand is a necessity too.

Worn Out But Worth It!!

We were on campus at 8:00 a.m. and I walked in the door at 8:00 p.m. That's just a little MUCH for me - but it was worth it. Tailgating with my kids and their friends is ALWAYS a blast. Today, we were lucky enough to have tickets for the game. I'm too exhausted to post much right now, but here's a "sampling" of our day. I'll add more over the next couple of days.

Mmmmmmm.....

My friend Amy makes these cookies in honor of the Irish. I may just have to seek out her tailgate on Saturday and get myself one (or two) of these!!!

Four Days and Counting.....

If you live here, you take it for granted.

We drive by it most days, we see the players at the mall and at local restaurants. It's in our newspaper and on our television screen day after day after day. We want any kind of a souvenir, it takes us 5 minutes to get one.

If you don't live here, you probably think we're sooooooooooo darn lucky. I guess we are, but it does have it's issues. For six weekends in the fall, our little community is invaded by hundreds of thousands of people. Detours are set up all over town - traffic patterns change. You don't dare try to go out and eat because you'll face a 2-hour wait. You wouldn't think of scheduling a wedding in the fall, because out of town guests would never be able to get a hotel room.

But, even after 20+ years of living here, we still get the "itch" when September rolls around - 'cause it can only mean one thing. It's time for the IRISH to take the field.

So, we're already planning our tailgate menu for Saturday - bright and early. Game time is 3:30. Bobby and his friends won't have a "CLUE" by the time the game starts, but between Bobby, Cohan, Matty and Timmy, we'll have all the entertainment we need for the day. For those in the group who don't have tickets to the game - it doesn't matter. That's actually kind of anti-climatic after a day of tailgating. We'll have the television and the generator and the dish set up in the JACC parking lot, along with Beer Pong and Corn Hole. Oh, and don't forget the leprechaun juice (Apple Pucker). The bottle gets passed when the Irish score.

As for me, my favorite part of the day is just strolling through the campus, visiting the Grotto and watching the band as they make their way to the stadium.

We're looking forward to a great day. Here's hoping a little IRISH luck shines down on us.

October in South Bend

Saturday was a perfect day in South Bend - unless you're a Notre Dame fan. The outcome stunk - but the day was beautiful!!! Temperatures were in the 60's, not a cloud in the sky and the Trojans from USC were in town. We had such a great visit last week with Bob's sister Chris and brother-in- law Ray. After stopping by on Thursday afternoon (en route to Ann Arbor from Bloomington) and spending the night - they came back on Friday night and spent Saturday tailgating with us. We had fun just walking the campus and soaking in all the atmosphere of "college game day" in Indiana. We'll see Chris and Ray again in a few weeks when we're home for Thanksgiving and then the next time we see them, we'll all be standing in Orlando airport - ready to cruise.

Notre Dame - Georgia Tech

Well, the outcome wasn't what we'd hoped for - in fact, it was down right embarassing - but it was still a great day, filled with friends, family and fun!!!! We were in the White Field at 8:30 a.m. setting up our tailgate, complete with three tents, two televisions, plenty of music, corn hole, beer pong, and more food and beer than we could possibly eat. The weather was beautiful and I was spending it with my loved ones - couldn't get much better than this.

Heard This Song....

...as I drove to work this morning. I've always loved it, but this time of year it always gives me goosebumps. For those of you who have never been here on a Saturday in September, October or November - please enjoy this video. The football team may be the "stars", but the band deserves the "Best Supporting Oscar". (If you chose to watch this video, please arrow down my sidebar and turn off my music player so it doesn't interfere).

As for us, the coolers are icing down, the taco dip has been made and the lawn chairs are in the car. Friends are coming in from Arizona and Chicago and our nephew is coming from St. Louis. Bobby and his friends will be "setting up shop" by 8:00 for a 3:30 game. The forecast says "sunny and 77 degrees". Looks like the perfect day to share our love of the Irish with family and friends.

Three Days to Go....

...and it's already here. Came back from lunch, and there it is "hovering" over the campus.

A New Look...

As we anxiously prepare for another season of Notre Dame Football (and the hype over WHO the starting quarterback will be on Saturday), I can't help but reflect on last year and how it's going to take some getting use to not seeing Number 10 on the field. Sounds like he's really been impressing the Cleveland Browns coaching staff, and I'm sure he will be in that starting spot before long. Found these photos today - looks like the "college boy" is gone and the "professional athlete" has emerged.

I'm still a little partial to this look.....

Two Weeks From Today.....

....let the fun begin!!!! We'll be tailgating bright and early in the White Field north of campus. Food will be plentiful, as will a few alcoholic beverages including Apple Pucker (Leprechaun Juice). The corn hole game will be set up and the challenges will be on. The television will be placed carefully on the tailgate of Bobby's truck. Our faces will be painted with shamrocks, we'll be dancing some Irish Jigs, and I'm sure a few Hail Mary's will be said as the Irish face off against Georgia Tech in the first game of the 2007 season. This is life in South Bend from September through November.

Let the Craziness Begin...

The rain has stopped (at least for a few days), the sun is shining bright and the weather man is predicting temps in the 70's for the weekend. Sounds like a perfect day to sit in a stadium with 80,000 screaming fans and cheer on the IRISH. Kelli is bouncing off the walls in anticipation of attending her first ND game and I'm the lucky one who gets to share it with her. (Bob's band is playing tomorrow night, so he has opted for a lawn chair and an afternoon nap while Kelli and I cheer on Brady Quinn and Jeff Samardzija).

Our company arrives EARLY tomorrow morning, 100 pieces of fried chicken is ordered for a 9 a.m. pick-up and Bobby (and his partners in crime) have the traditional home game tailgate planned in the White Field north of campus.

Now, as if tomorrow wasn't enough to wear me out - Sunday Kevin has a college double header at home and we have dinner plans at the Bonefish with Colleen, Jimmy and his family to celebrate his birthday.

One quick BLINK and it will be Monday morning!

God's Smiling Down on Us...

This was quite a sight during this morning's commute. Kind of a nice way to start the day!!

Another Day of Tailgating...

It must be tough when best friends cheer for opposing teams. Somehow Kevin and Mike manage to maintain their friendship while cheering on the Irish and the Wolverines.

Another Busy Weekend....

Our nephew from St. Louis is coming to town today to join his cousins in routing on the Irish this weekend. Should be another beautiful Saturday in South Bend to cheer on Notre Dame against the Wolverines of Michigan. Yep....a BIG ONE!!!

Bob's band plays tomorrow night at a local club, so Alex will get to see Uncle Bob in action. And then Sunday, I get to scrapbook with other members of the Design Team.

WOW - Monday will be here before we know it!

Next weekend - a big wedding!!!!!
