The Best Journey Takes You Home….

Last summer, we traveled “home”.  For us, that means the small, Southern Illinois town of Greenville.  It’s where I grew up, went to high school and college, fell in love, married and started a family.

This little town has one grocery store and one McDonalds.  The County Courthouse sits on the town square, surrounded by mom & pop businesses.  Even after being away from there for 30 years, I can still walk down the street and see someone I went to high school with, or someone who new my mom and dad.

My in-laws still live there.  In July, they celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary.  Sixty years of marriage, seven children, 23 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

It was a wonderful weekend of stories and photographs and best of all, FAMILY.  All of our children were able to make it, and all but one grandchild (due to a Flower Girl commitment in Indiana).

I am blessed beyond means.

Alex: Down Under

My nephew, Alex has spent the past month in Australia – visiting his sister Annie as she completed her student teaching. Annie has graciously stayed there an extra month to be a tour guide for her big brother. I’ll probably never make this trip, so I’m living vicariously through his photos. I can honestly say that I LOVE all his photos, except that shark adventure he went on. That kid ALWAYS was the daredevil of the family!!

Miracle….

You know how you have those events in your lifetime that you remember every detail of? October 19, 2008 will be one of those days for me. The excitement, the fear, the relief and the gratitude.

Some day, little A.J. can read about the miracle of his birth, thanks to my scrapbook page. My photographs didn’t turn out well (thanks to hospital lighting), but the photograph of father and daughter is one I’ll treasure forever.

The journaling reads as follows:

It started with a phone call at 8:30 p.m. on October 19th. "MOM, I think I'm in labor!" I tried to keep her calm, and told her to call the answering service. She had been suffering all day with a terrible case of the stomach flu. Ten minutes later, Jimmy called back to tell us that the doctor wanted to see her at the hospital. Her due date was still three weeks away, but little A. J. seemed to be in a hurry. As I stepped off the elevator on the third floor, I could hear her screaming. As Jimmy told me later, he felt we were "living an episode of ER, but this was happening to us." As nurses crowded around her, I tried to answer their questions. One nurse told me that most likely the sever stomach flu had forced her into labor. I heard someone say she was 9 centimeters dilated. Then her doctor appeared in the doorway and everything else seemed a blur - nurses tossing gowns to Jimmy and I and the doctor asking Colleen if she wanted to push, and then suddenly rushing her across the hall to surgery. Within minutes, we wer in our gowns and rushing through the door, only to be met by a nurse who told us they were doing an emergency c-section and we would have to wait in the hall. It couldn't have been more than three minutes and the nurse returned to tell us that the baby had been born and both of them were "ok" and the doctor would be out soon to talk with us. I walked down the hall looking for Bob and the kids, only to be met by my dear friend Mary Lou - with camera in hand. Within minutes, family started to arrive. Jimmy and Colleen left their home at 9:00. Andrew Joseph Van Fleit was born at 9:39 p.m. on his Grandpa Bob's birthday. The details of this night have been shared on more than one occasion, but the reality is that Colleen was "abrupting" and the doctor and staff had a matter of minutes to deliver the baby safely. For me, the most touching moment was when I saw Bob lean over her bed and I was able to capture it (thanks to Mary Lou's camera). From there, he went to meet his grandson. Every time I look at little A. J., I thank God for the "miracle" that he is.

Sisters…..

I didn’t grow up with a sister, which is one reason I LOVE seeing my girls together.  They fought constantly when they lived under my roof - but now as adults, they are best friends.  The share a great group of friends too, which makes me look even more forward to the “antics” at our upcoming weddings.

"RAINY" Day in Chicago

Well, the weather in Chicago may have been rainy, but that didn't dampen the spirits of four BEATLE fans. I had purchasd the tickets as a Christmas gift for Bob. Ben's mom bought the tickets for him and Kelli for his birthday last week. The four of us headed into the city, went to the afternoon performance and finished the day with dinner at the Italian Village.

As for "RAIN" - the name came from an unknown Beatle song on the flip side of Paperback Rider". The show was fantastic - covering all the years from the Ed Sullivan Show through Abbey Road. Four costume changes (including Sgt. Pepper). The audience spent most of the show on their feet, singing and dancing in the aisles.

During the finale of HEY JUDE, "Paul" asked everyone OVER 50 to sing and then everyone UNDER 18. It showed how many generations their music had covered.

Talented Friends....

I have a friend who is an extremely talented photographer. She started a business last fall and our family jumped at the chance to have her photograph the "babies". Yesterday, she did another photo shoot with Colleen's kids. Jenny, I'm thinking the Knight, Urbanski, Van Fleit families will keep your business "healthy" for years to come.

Here's a sampling of what Jenny Hoke has provided us with over the past four months.....

Benjamin Van Fleit: 3 years old

A. J. Van Fleit - 4 months old

Katie and Santiago's Engagement Shoot:

Anna Knight - 14 months old (taken in November)

What a Weekend!!!

It just couldn't have been any better. I have lots of stories and photos to share, but suffice it to say that it was "perfect".

My little brother Frank and sister-in-law Arlette flew in on Friday morning, bringing lots of sunshine and warm weather with them from Florida. This morning, Kevin and I took them back to the airport for their flight home. After saying our "goodbyes", Kevin and I went upstairs to the viewing deck, where about 30 people were waiting. Coincidently, Air Force One and President Obama were arriving in South Bend this morning. Frank and Arlette boarded their plane and waited. At first they were told they would take off before Air Force one landed and they would miss it by five minutes. Just a few minutes later, the announcement was made that all air traffic had ceased. The Allegiant flight sat on the tarmack and Air Force One thundered onto the runway.

Arlette called me from her cell phone to tell me that her seat was on the "right" side and she was able to see it. In fact, she was snapping away and people across the aisle were passing her their email addresses so she could share her photos. Air Force One taxied down the runway, turned and parked right behind the Allegiant Flight.

Kevin and I watched as the motorcade departed the airport and then we went to pick up Colleen, Benjamin and little A.J. and did some shopping and out to lunch. That is still my brother's flight sitting and waiting (lower right hand corner of photo).

On the way home, we thought that MAYBE we could stop back near the airport and watch the plane take off. We found a place to park and we waited. Before long, the motorcade approached and within 10 minutes, Air Force started moving toward us. Kevin jumped out of the car to hold Benjamin and I grabbed my camera. I think this sight may have been even more impressive than this morning.

It went past us, turned and the engines were revving up. Kevin and Benjamin had the perfect view!!!

.....and just like that, it's off.

January 2003

Looking at these photos makes me feel old. It's been six years and yet it seems like just a short time ago - January 25, 2003. From the day his unit was activated, we had one short week to come to the realization that our son was heading off to war. One week to get his affairs in order - Power of Attorney, Last Will and Testament. On September 11, 2001, I knew in my soul that this day would come - but I was never prepared for the emotional toll it would take on all of our lives, and how I would come to lean on my family and friends more than ever. On this morning, all of the families met at the South Bend Armory to say "good-bye". TV stations were there, doing interviews.

Lots of photos were taken and lots of tears were shed. Our family did receive a short "reprieve". While most of the unit flew out on this day, the commanding officer and a select few remained behind for a few more days to make sure that all the heavy equipment was loaded correctly. This small group flew out on Monday morning. Chrissie had gone back to college and Kevin and Kelli had gone on to school (at Bobby's request). Bob and I, along with Carrie and Katie and Colleen went to the Armory on Monday morning to say "good-bye". Unlike Saturday - when it had been packed with news crews and families and Marines, on this morning, it was just us - two parents, three sisters and one soldier. I remember standing there for a few minutes, making small talk - no one wanting to make the first move. And then Bob pulled Bobby into his arms and hugged him. I remember all of us in one giant group hug, with tears flowing and prayers being said. And then he walked away.

I sat in my car and watched as the van pulled away to take him to the airport. I sat in my car and cried and then I got myself together and went to work and tried to keep my life as normal as possible for the next six months - until he walked back into our arms.

The Windy City

Bob and I spent the weekend in Chicago. We drove into the city on Saturday, got checked into the Hotel Monaco (and had a beautiful room on the 11th floor), before taking off on foot. Yes, it was cold - but thankfully, we had a major collection of scarves and mittens and we were ready for whatever nature had to offer. First stop, a quick lunch - Chicago Dogs of course. After lunch, we thought we'd head to Millenium Park and the Ice Rink and the Bean - but the "cold" won out and we opted for an hour at Borders instead. I bought a couple of books, we grabbed an XL bag of the "mix" at Garret's Popcorn and then headed back to the hotel so that Bob could watch some college basketball and take a nap. (Some things don't change - even on a get-away weekend).

We had 5:30 reservations at Petterino's, so we left the hotel and started walking. You have to walk past the Oriental Theater to get to Petterino's and unfortunately, we timed it and got there just as the 2:00 matinee of WICKED was letting out. It was a "sea of humanity". We arrived a little early for our dinner reservation, and even though the restaurant was packed, they ushered us right in to our seats. Unlike most "nice" restaurants I've been to - where they try and "turn around the tables" as quickly as possible, our waiter informed us that this was our spot until we left for the theater. Dinner was fantastic and we were never rushed. We walked the 1/2 block to the Oriental at 7:30, posed for a couple of photos and then inside to a beautiful lobby. The theater was built in 1927 and has been completely restored - absolutely beautiful!!!

I managed to snap one quick photo of the stage curtain - showing a map of OZ. Once the production started, no photos were allowed.

It was midnight by the time we made our way back to the hotel. We were cold and hungry - and I was so happy we'd decided to stay and not attempt to drive home at that hour. Sunday morning, we woke to bright sunshine and a beautiful view of the Sears Tower from our window. But don't let the sunshine fool you - the wind was blowing and it was COLD!

We enjoyed a late breakfast adjacent to our hotel, at the Southwater Kitchen and then grabbed our car from the valet and headed home. An absolutely PERFECT weekend!!!

WICKED, Petterino's and Hotel Monaco

Only three more days of sub-zero windchills and blizzards and trying to fight my way to the office. Then I'll get to face the sub-zero windchills and snow of downtown Chicago. But, at least it will be the weekend and I'll be with Bob and we'll get to enjoy a wonderful dinner, the theater and the Hotel Monaco. Throw in a bag of popcorn from Garrett's and my weekend will be complete!

http://www.garrettpopcorn.com/

As for dinner, that will be at Petterino's. I've been there before and it was wonderful and I'm excited to share it with Bob.

After dinner, we'll be seeing WICKED at the Oriental Theater. This theater has housed an open-run of WICKED for the past three years. That run ends on January 25th.

I love staying in downtown Chicago. The hotels are old and classic and the decor is beautiful - and right now, many of them are offering great "winter rates". Here's a sampling of the Hotel Monaco. Of course, our view will include a LOT of snow and ice.

Guitar Hero

Our son Kevin and soon to be son-in-law Brock might think they hold the record in this family for most points scored in Guitar Hero - but they haven't come up against the latest challenge. Watch out guys - this one's got something to prove.

The Linebacker

The Linebacker is a bar - located just east of the Notre Dame campus. It's nothing fancy, but it is a favorite hangout for students and locals - including all of my kids and their friends. Drinks are cheap and the DJ is good.

Saturday night, Bob and I went out to dinner with Katie and Colleen, to celebrate their birthday. After dinner, we made a stop at Bar Louie for drinks, and met up with more of their friends. From Bar Louie, the group seemed destined to find their way to The Linebacker and wouldn't take "no" for an answer from Bob and I. So we went - and sure enough, we were the two oldest people in the bar. But I have to admit, it was so much fun! My kids have the BEST friends and we had lots of laughs. Here we are with three of our daughters, one son-in-law, and two soon to be son-in-laws. Maybe one of these days, we'll find our way back to The Linebacker.

In Love.....and Happy!

As a parent, we can't choose who our daughters fall in love with. In that aspect, we've been blessed with the choices our daughters have made. We spent some time last night with three of our daughters, along with one husband and two fiances - and what a fun time we had!!!

Yesterday, Katie and Santiago spent some time on the Notre Dame campus with our family photographer friend, Jenny Hoke - for an engagement shoot. Katie was so excited last night, talking about the photos and how cold it was and how she couldn't wait to see the photos. And this morning, Jenny has a few of the photos already posted. I know that Katie will be thrilled!!!! Here's a few to share....

2008 - The Year In Review

The older I get, the faster the years fly by. It just seems like a couple of months ago that we trudged home in a blizzard from last year's New Year's Eve party in our neighborhood - and now, we prepare to bid "good-bye" to 2008. I'm also quick to realize that two of my daughters just celebrated their last Christmas as a "Knight" and that the first of our two weddings is in less than 8 months.

Looking back on the high points of 2008....
  • Kelli turned 16 in February and got her driver's license.
  • Bob and I spent a week cruising the Caribbean with family and friends in April.
  • Chrissie and Brock were engaged in June.
  • Kevin turned 21 in August.
  • Our 6th grandchild - Andrew Joseph Van Fleit was born in October.
  • Katie and Satiago were engaged in November.

It was a year of change, a year of blessings, and a year of one major miracle.
