We Did It!!!!

The conversation began about it 24 hours after we got home. It must have something to do with "vacation withdrawl". It was Sunday afternoon, April 13th and I was on the phone with my sister-in-law Arlette. I'd seen her just 24 hours earlier and now we were 1200 miles apart.

We started talking about dates and somehow November 7, 2009 came into the picture. Rates are cheaper that week for some reason. We shouldn't have to worry about hurricanes on that end and blizzards on our end.

As of today, we have 24 rooms being held on the Carnival Glory for our next Family/Friends cruise - Eastern Caribbean - Nassau, St. Thomas, St. Martaan.

You have until May 30th to reserve your spot - and then 15 months to pay it off.

COME ON!!!!

JOIN US!!!!!

We can promise a GOOD TIME!!!!

She Lost the Fight.....

My good friend Kate Coleman lost her 18 year battle with multiple sclerosis this morning - at the age of 49. Kate and I were brought together years ago by two little girls at Corpus Christi - her Maggie and my Kelli. Today, at 16 years old - the two are still inseparable. Kate was the youngest of 7 children and she used to always tell Kelli - "Kel, I was YOU - I know what you're going through".

A few weeks before Kelli's 10th birthday, her brother Bobby was deployed to Iraq. Those were dark days for Kelli, and Maggie was right there beside her for the long haul. I remember seeing a copy of a letter that Maggie sent to Bobby and I called Kate to read it to her on the phone. We both had a good cry over that. The Coleman's also threw a surprise birthday party for Kelli on her 10th birthday - to try and surround her with her friends and get her mind off of the war.

Two years ago, Kate, Sean and Maggie took Kelli with them on a Spring Break Cruise and had invited her on another one last month, before Kate became so ill.

In January, Maggie had the lead roll in St. Joe High School's production of "ANNIE". Kelli and I sat there in the crowd with tears as Maggie began to sing. As we hugged Sean and Kate following the performance, you could see the pride in their eyes. I'm so glad Kate was able to see that.

I picked Kelli up from school this morning, when we received the word. I took her to spend some time with Maggie. As I stood there and watched the two friends - speaking with tears and no words, I realized that they will share this bond for a lifetime.

Kate and Maggie had a special mother/daughter bond and their favorite verbal repartee was: "I love you" - "I love you more".

I did "ok" today as I read the beautiful obituary posted on the Kaniewski Funeral Home website. That was until I got to the end.....

Kate fought to live her life to the fullest and ended each day looking forward to the promise of the next. Her bright, warm, optimistic, determined fighting spirit is an inspiration to those of us who are blessed to have known and loved her. Kate was beloved. Kate was amazing.

"The sun 'll come up tomorrow. Bet your bottom dollar that tomorrow, there'll be sun. Tomorrow, tomorrow, I love ya' tomorrow. You're only a day away."

"I love you more, mom". -- Maggie

Could We Be So Lucky???

Within 24 hours of stepping off the Carnival Glory two weeks ago, we were already on the phone talking about another cruise. It's a sickness - I just can't explain it! Our next tentative date is a year and a half away, but it gives us something to look forward to. So, we have a date and an itinerary chosen - November 7, 2009 - Eastern Caribbean aboard the Carnival Glory - Nassau, St. Thomas and St. Martin. We have a list of 12 interested couples!!!

Yesterday, an article appeared in the Orlando Sentinal - telling about a new ship, the Carnival Dream which is currently under construction in Italy and is scheduled to be based at Port Canaveral in the fall of 2009. The Dream is a 130,000 ton ship - the largest in the Carnival fleet and will hold 3,652 passengers - nearly 700 more than the Glory. Carnival has stated that the ship's itinerary will be disclosed at a later date, but port officials are assuming that it will replace the Glory on its current 7-day itinerary.

I called Carnival yesterday and asked what would happen if we had a group sailing scheduled on the Glory for November of '09 and then the Dream moves in and the Glory is sent to another port? I was told that our reservations would transfer to the new ship at no additional cost to us. WOW - could we be that lucky to be some of the first to sail on a new ship???? Guess we'll just have to wait and see.

Here is an artist's rendition of what the new Carnival Dream will look like....

Key West Layout

Here's another new layout I completed for the Design Team - a U-Pick assignment using the Bo-Bunny Organic/Travel line. Still haven't got around to doing my small album from Key West last summer, but these pictures worked great with the product.

Carnival GLORY - Day 6 - AT SEA

Thursday was spent pretty much the same as Wednesday - up early and on the Lido Deck with my book and coffee. I noticed every morning (at sea) that there would be a group of six to eight lounges in several areas around us - that had been marked with towels, books, shoes, etc. - long before my 7:30 a.m. arrival. I sat there and watched and the earliest ANYONE arrived in those lounges was 10:00 a.m. I'm honestly thinking that they got up EARLY, ran out there - marked their territory and went back to bed.

So, with the sunshine, drinks, music and Lido Deck contests - this day was a carbon copy of the day before - EXCEPT for the Chocolate Extravaganza, held in conjunction with the lunch buffet. I don't think I ever saw this much chocolate in one place at one time. Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm!!!!!

After gorging ourselves on chocolate - it was back to our lounge chairs to watch the afternoon Lido Deck entertainment - the Survivor Contest. About 4:00, we made our way back to the cabin for a shower and a nap before our second Formal Night. We had also scheduled photographs with our group of 40 for 7:00 in the main atrium. A Carnival photographer met with us and took several family shots and group shots. They told us that they would print 20 copies so that each family could purchase the group photo. After dinner, it was back to our room for a quick change and then off to the White Heat for a little dancing.

We had to "party" in order to stay up late again. Tonight was the Grand Gala Buffet. Photos from 11:00 until 11:45 and then you could eat at midnight. We weren't interested in eating - just viewing.

After a quick stop back at the White Heat for some more dancing, it was off to bed - because we'll be docking early in the morning in Nassau.

Nothing Like It.....

Teenage girls and high school softball. We've been surrounded by it for nearly 15 years - starting with Carrie, then Katie and Colleen and Chrissie. We got a 4-year reprieve - but we spent it doing baseball with Kevin and now we're back to the softball gig with Kelli. Saturday was spent in Wawasee, Indiana - in the middle of Amish country. It was an invitational tournament and we were there bright and early in the morning - dodging the raindrops. Luckily, the rain subsided and the sun came out and it turnd into a beautiful day. We lost the first game in the bottom of the 7th. We'd led the entire game, but just couldn't hold on to that 1-run lead. The second game found us giving up five runs in the first inning - NOT a good way to start! But, we managed to claw our way back and had a HUGE 5th inning and ended up winning the game 10-6. That made for a MUCH better bus ride home! I had fun getting some photos of the girls between games. I love these first couple - Kelli and Jamie comparing their softball battle scars.

The Best Part of a Cruise.....

The best part of a cruise?

Seven nights of these....

Carnival GLORY Cruise - Day 5 - At Sea

After two busy port days (Cozumel and Belize), we were more than ready for a day of relaxation. I left Bob sleeping soundly when I slipped out of the room at 7:30 and headed for the Lido Deck. I found Gena's book and towels and assumed she was already on the track. I grabbed a couple more lounges next to her and ran to fill my mug with my morning chocolate/caramel latte. Then it was back to my chair to sit back and enjoy watching the Glory "come to life". The rest of the girls (Tonya, Arlette, and Chris) made their way out to join us before long and we usually saw our men by late morning. Of course, they NEVER sat in the sun. They roamed the decks, watched some basketball and volleyball, played a little corn-hole and drank a lot of Miller Lite.

The following were pretty much my view for the day....

Of course, Tad had to get a photo of us girls doing what we do best. Notice the Carnival guy with the drink tray. We utilized this MORE than once!!

These days at sea would probably seem pretty boring to most - 'cause we really didn't do anything. We laid in the sun, read our books, listened to music, and drank foo-foo drinks from early morning until late afternoon. Life just doesn't get much better!

After a day of total relaxation, we showered and got dressed and ready for our Dinner Club reservation. The Glory's Dinner Club is called the Emerald Room. There is a $30 per person charge for this reservation, but it was probably the best dinner any of us have ever had. We were told to allow 2 1/2 hours for the "dining experience". The cuts of meat are brought to your table and described in great detail. Everything is very relaxed - not rushed. We drank wine, took photos of our food and enjoyed our wonderful dinner with friends.

OK, so now after 2+ hours of eating we go back to our rooms - change into comfy clothes and then it's on to the "DECK PARTY" which starts at 11:30 p.m. Under the stars on the LIDO Deck, a DJ playing, lots of Electric Slide and Cha Cha Slide and a Mexican Buffet to boot.

We crawled into bed sometime around 1:00 a.m.

Wake Up Call....

My alarm is set for 5:45 a.m. At 5:40, I got a different kind of wake up call. My bed started shaking and my window blinds were making funny noises. I've felt this a couple of other times in my life, growing up in southern Illinois. I knew right away away what it was. An earthquake. I turned on the television and a few minutes later, our local news affiliate was reporting a 5.4 earthquake located near the Indiana/Illinois border - 250 miles away from here. That was enough shaking for me! Glad we don't live in California!!!

Carnival GLORY Cruise - Day 4 - Belize

We were up bright and early on Tuesday morning. Some of us met for breakfast at 7:00 a.m. and by 7:40, we had assembled in the Ebony Cabaret to get in line for our tender tickets. This was handled differently than on our last Glory cruise. At 8:00 they came in and made the announcement that an additional gangway had been made available and because of this, no tickets would be issued. Everyone in the Ebony Cabaret would be taken down as one group and would be put on to tenders. This was the view from the Ebony Cabaret - looking out at the tenders waiting for their passengers.

We were told that we were anchored approximately 7 miles offshore. The tender ride into Belize was about 10-15 minutes. Didn't seem long at all. As soon as we stepped off the tender and had our photo taken....

....we spotted the representatives from Major Tom's Cave Tubing. Major Tom greeted us and introduced us to our guides, Mike, George and Junior. This would be Major Tom himself....

We had a group of 20 and we were escorted to our bus and quickly on our way. Mike gave our commentary as we made our way through the city. He gave us a lot of history of the city, information about the schools and hospitals and neighborhoods.

Once we left the city, George took over with the commentary through the countryside. We stopped at a little roadside store, for a bathroom and snack break.

Here's my nephew Lance, posing with our guides - George, Mike and Junior...

As we continued through the countryside, we came across a Police Check Point, and we were told that they were looking for drugs.

After about another half hour, we arrived at the park where we would leave the bus and continue on foot.

We were told to leave our hats, sunglasses, etc. behind. Didn't want to risk having to retrieve something from the river. We were given our life preservers, headlamps and tubes and the hike began. We walked about 5 minutes and arrived at the river. We were encouraged to get in the river and get wet - despite the fact that the water was COLD! Here's Bob and I working our way into the river....

The temperatures on this particular day were in the low 90's, but the water was mountain fed. Our guides informed us that by cooling off in the water, we'd better prepare our bodies for the half hour hike through the rain forest - and they were right. Most of the guys in our group chose to jump into the river from the rock ledge above - but us girls waded in - very slowly. Here's my brother - getting ready for his JUMP....

George was full of information during our rain forest trek - pointing out poisonous plants and the anecdote plant or tree that grew right next to it. We ate termites - very small, crunchy and minty. I'm proud to say that I DID IT!! Finally, we arrived at the beginning of our tubing excursion. We climbed into the river and our guides helped us link our tubes together. I'm really glad we did this! George told us that Major Tom has been running these excursions since the early 1980's and that he was the first one to use the "linking" and that now, most other companies have followed suit. Once we completed our tour through the caves, we were allowed to "free-float" for the last half hour or so.

Our guides were just the BEST! They divided our group of 20 into two groups and one guide linked himself to the front end of each group. The third guide brought up the rear to watch out for anyone who might become detached. They pointed out various formations throughout the caves that the Mayan Indians used as part of their religious rituals. One major word of advice.....heed the warning "BUTTS UP". The guides will tell you this and repeat it faithfully. There are points in the caves were the water will go from 40' deep to 3" deep. When someone yells "BUTTS UP", you'd better do it, or your butt cheeks will pay the price! The 2+ hours that you are drifting through the caves will actually bring you full circle - back to the point where you first entered the water to cool off. Once you get out of your tube, it's just a 5 minute walk back to the Park and the bus.

We stopped at a roadside restaurant called Amigos.

We were running a little short on time, so our guides had called ahead and ordered lunch. They ran inside, picked up our lunches and we continued on our way. I don't know if it's because we were STARVING or what, but that may have been one of the best meals of the week. It consisted of stewed chicken, rice and beans, and the best fresh-squeezed orange juice imaginable. It was YUMMY!!!

We arrived back at the port area with about an hour of shopping time. We really didn't see much that appealed to us, so we grabbed a tender and headed back to the Glory. Here you can see all the ships anchored seven miles out....

Once we were back onboard, we made our way to our cabin and sat on the balcony to enjoy the view as we pulled up anchor and departed Belize. This photo shows how shallow we actually sit, as the propellers stir up the sand.

At this point, exhaustion has set in. We took showers and laid down for a nap before dinner. We shared our day's events with our table mates, who did the Mayan Temple Bus/River Excursion and loved it!!!! After dinner, it was a quick stop at the White Heat Club and then back to the cabin - to be greeted by this guy....

Carnival GLORY Cruise - Day 3 - Cozumel

We were lucky with the weather our entire week. Monday morning brought us a beautiful sunrise as we sailed into Cozumel. We were up early and enjoyed breakfast in our Carnival robes on our balcony. Then it was time to get dressed, meet our friends for some MORE breakfast at the buffet and then head to the top decks to watch as we sailed smoothly alongside the Carnival Fantasy.

We were off the ship by 10:30 and headed into the shopping district.

HEY - "Welcome to Cozumel".

Us women had ONE thing on our minds - JEWELRY - and we were all very successful with our bartering. Our husbands just sat outside the stores and shook their heads.

After our shopping excursion, we were hungry and thirsty and we set our sights on Senor Frogs.

mmmmmmmmm - guacamole!!!!

We spent an hour enjoying the music and contests with our friends at Senor Frogs and then it was off to our Deluxe Sail and Snorkel Excurion - courtesy of Fury Catamarans. Here are Gena and I, patiently waiting for our excursion...

So, we all hopped aboard the catamaran - beer and margaritas were flowing freely - tropical music pumping from the speakers. After about a half hour, we anchored offshore and spent about 45 minutes snorkeling.

Once the snorkeling portion of the excursion was complete, we ended up on a private beach for an hour of relaxation and all the beer and margaritas we could consume. Looks like our husbands found the perfect spot....

After an hour of total relaxation, we boarded our catamaran for the ride back to the pier and we arrived back at the Glory with only about 10 minutes to spare. We went straight to the Lido Deck and found a spot by the railing to watch as the Glory pushed away.

Before heading to our room, I made my way to the Glory's Aft for this shot. I love seeing the ship's wake.

Monday evening consisted of dinner in the Platinum Dining Room and then a show in the Amber Palace - "Living in America". We all enjoyed this show very much!! We drug back to our room around midnight to be greeted by our latest "friend" and we dropped into bed and drifted off to sleep beneath that ever so comfortable Carnival bedding.

Next Installment: Belize, Cave Tubing with Major Tom
