Nolan, Grace and Jack

Memorial Day was spent watching Uncle Kevin and the Colonials play in the first round of the South Bend Baseball Sectionals.

Nolan, Grace and Jack haven't missed many games this spring - and Monday night, they even got their Dad to come!!!

There wasn't a seat to hold Grace and Nolan in place, but Jack just sat and took it all in. What a good baby he is!!!!!!!

Sectionals Begin...

Nothing like celebrating Memorial Day at the old ballpark - and that's just what the Knight/Urbanski clan did last night - opening night of the South Bend Baseball Sectionals. I arrived early to take plenty of photos - knowing that if we lost, there would be no 18 year olds posing with smiles for mom.

But we didn't lose!!!! A big win over Michigan City, which now sets up a Clay/LaPorte clash in the semi-finals on Thursday night. We lost to LaPorte three weeks ago in the bottom of the 7th, so we know we can do it - but it will take everything we've got.

Here's our guys looking on as LaPorte beats Washington in Game 1.

.... a little serious at first, but then some fun with the camera -

Kevin, on his way to his centerfield spot...

...and being cheered on by his biggest fan - Nolan.

...and finally, celebrating a big WIN!!! (Kevin's the last one in the background - making his way to the celebration from 375 feet away).

The Last of Seven....

After 19 years and 7 children, our days at Corpus Christi School are over. Kelli graduated on Thursday evening amidst plenty of smiles and tears. It was a beautiful evening, shared with her parents, her grandparents and her older siblings.

Here's just a few of the smiles...

...and one last look at an empty hallway (which brought about the final bout of tears from Kelli).

Senior Night

Even a half hour rain shower couldn't dampen the spirits or the smiles on this evening. We managed to still have our picnic, the skies cleared, a double rainbow appeared and our winning ways continued. Our seven seniors posed for photos before devouring an 8' sub sandwich and then it was down to the business of defeating #10 ranked Elkhart Memorial in a thrilling 7th inning win!! Winning the Reinbold Invitational Classic and defeating a team like Elkhart Memorial is a great way to end our regular season and head into Sectionals next week.

Prior to the big game, the senior moms had a little fun - posing for photos in their son's travel jerseys.

A week ago, the senior players had posed for this photo...

...and last night, the moms decided to recreate that photo.

Even our little Nolan managed to stick it out the entire game and he was thrilled to finally get his picture taken with his favorite player (besides Uncle Kevin) - Josh Willis. It just so happened that Josh was the one to get the winning hit in the bottom of the 7th and he made sure to tell Nolan that he'd drank four glasses of milk that day. (If you don't know the "milk" story - read further down my BLOG for the story - Out of the Mouths of Babes).

..and of course, one picture with Kevin. Nolan's parting words, "I'm proud of you Uncle Kevin".

American Idol Final

American Idol brings us it's performance final tonight. It's been hard to switch my loyalties, but I'm routing for Taylor and his "Soul Patrol". I'd sure be a whole lot more excited if I was seeing this performer...

Another Win...

Last night - Clay 4 - St. Joe 1

Record - 15-7

Nothing quite like getting to play at Coveleski Stadium.

Winning Team

This was one happy bunch on Saturday night (well, as happy as 18 year old boys can make themselves look for cameras being held by their mothers) - having just scored 17 runs - including four homeruns, one of which was a GRAND SLAM!!! As of today, they have a record of 14 and 7.

Kevin's on the left (kneeling) - number 7.

Four games on the agenda this week and sectionals start a week from today. It will all be over with too soon. Posted by Picasa

After a Week...

After a week of rainouts - we played baseball last night and the SUN even came out for a little while!!!!

Back on the winning side of things and ready to face Washington tonight, Penn tomorrow night and Marian on Friday.

Kind of hard to accept that in two weeks his high schoool baseball career will be over.

Love you Kevin - so very proud of you and the way you've earned your team's respect.

This Weather Plays "HECK" With a Pitching Staff...

Kevin just called - no big surprise - tonight's game is canceled. That makes four rainouts in the past six days. Are we ever going to play again???

I think Noah and the Ark are coming shortly!!! When you start seeing pairs of animals, head for higher ground! Pray for sunshine!!!!!!!!

As for high school baseball in the Northern Indiana Conference - the next ten days looks to be interesting. Starting tomorrow night (if the rain subsides and the sun happens to appear) we start playing and we will continue to play EVERY night this week, and Saturday. We'll be off on Sunday to pray for more sunshine, and then Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday next week. Sectionals begin two weeks from today and can't start until all conference games are completed. As of today, we have three to make up along with the regular schedule.

So, if you're looking for anyone from our household for the next couple of weeks, cell phone might be your best bet.

At the beginning of the season, Bob said "as good as we are, we don't have enough pitching and that will come back to haunt us in the end".

The man's a psychic!!

Hopefully, everyone else is in the same "ark".

Out of the Mouths of Babes...

To give you a little background - Nolan has been a pretty consistant fan at Uncle Kevin's high school games this spring. Aside from Uncle Kevin, he's got his eye on Kevin's teammate - Josh Willis. Now any little boy would idolize Josh - he's big and strong and he hits LOTS of homeruns. (Uncle Kevin is skinny and wirey and gets base hits).

So, over the weekend, Carrie is trying to get Nolan to drink milk - which he just won't do. She told him that if he drank milk he would hit homeruns at his t-ball games. After thinking about this for a minute, he said "does Josh Willis drink milk?" Of course Carrie assured Nolan that Josh must drink LOTS of milk, because he's hit so many homeruns. Nolan looked very interested and then responded, "Uncle Kevin doesn't drink milk."

....Uncle Kevin wasn't the least bit amused.

A Real Pain in the Neck...

I've got one - have had one for three days. Woke up Wednesday morning and there it was. Just not normal!!!! I've gone DOWNHILL for the past 48 hours - can't sleep at night and in constant pain. I NEED DRUGS!!!!

This morning, I was waiting at my doctor's office at 8:00 when they unlocked the doors. They took one look at me and knew I meant business. As of right now, they're treating it as a cervical strain - even though I didn't do anything to cause a "strain". I'm on a strong muscle relaxant and if I'm not better by Monday, I'll be facing an MRI.

So, as for my Mother's Day weekend plans - in the midst of this cold and rain - a nice warm bed, plenty of muscle relaxants and some good movies.

Gracie is TWO!!!

Yesterday was a beautiful day to spend with family and to celebrate our little Grace's 2nd birthday.

Don't let this angelic face fool you. She is one strong-willed little girl - just ask Nolan.

She's Grandma's special little girl and she has her Grandpa wrapped around her little finger.

24 Hours and 3 Conference Games...

Thanks to rain on Monday and Tuesday - we "paid" for it on Wednesday and Thursday with 3 games in a matter of 24 hours. A little tough on a pitching staff, but we managed to come out on top in all three games...

Clay 4 - Mishawaka 1

Clay 7 - Riley 5

Clay 10 - St. Joseph 0

As of this morning, we sit with a record of 11-4. Today - a well deserved day off and tomorrow - a tough opponent in LaPorte.

WAY TO GO COLONIALS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

A Little Press for the Colonials...

It was so nice to open the paper this morning and see this picture on the front page of the sports section. We're having a great season and a little press was fun to see!!! Posted by Picasa Even though mine is no "star", he's the anchor of the outfield (center field) and does a great job there. These guys are his best friends and teammates and we're proud of all of them!!

Sobol Super for Clay

Uses arm, and bat to subdue Cavemen
MATT KOPSEA
Tribune Staff Writer
SOUTH BEND

-- Mike Sobol wore out Mishawaka Wednesday afternoon. The junior left-hander scattered four hits with seven strikeouts over seven innings and also belted a two-run homer, lifting Clay to a 4-1 triumph over Mishawaka in Northern Indiana Conference baseball action at Coveleski Stadium. Sobol's blast over the right-center field wall off of Randy Schuster capped a three-run second-inning for the Colonials (9-4, 5-3 NIC).

"I was hoping to get a fast ball and make solid contact," said Sobol, who walked two and hit a pair of batters. "At first, I didn't think it was gone. But I guess the wind got a hold of it and carried it out." Mike Serge got the ball rolling for Clay with a leadoff single and scored on Mike DePoy's double off the top of the left field wall. Sobol (3-2) then delivered. "Mike's a fast ball type hitter and he was able to get one to his liking," said Clay coach Chip O'Neil. "When you have a pitcher like Schuster that's going to throw strikes, you want to come out swinging. I was happy because that's what we came out and did today."

Clay struck again in the fourth when Josh Willis led off with a round-tripper to left to make it 4-0. Limited to three baserunners through four innings, the Cavemen (8-7, 5-4 NIC) made a push in the fifth to get back in the game. Neal Hickle was hit by a pitch, followed by a single by Phil Wertz. A sacrifice bunt attempt by Matt Brothers paid off as Sobol threw wildly down the third base line, allowing pinch-runner Ryan Warmoth to score. With runners at second and third, Scott Versyp walked to load the bases with no outs. But Sobol buckled down. He got Mike Huling to fly out to right. Shawn Ferguson then hit a comebacker. Sobol threw home to catcher Serge for the first out, but Serge's relay to first baseman Nate Najdek went into the back of Ferguson. The home plate umpire, though, ruled Ferguson out for interference "He (the umpire) ruled that Ferguson had one foot inside the line and the rest of his body was on the line," said Mishawaka coach John Huemmer. " It was a questionable judgment call which I just happened not to agree with. But that wasn't the difference in the game. "We had six other innings in which we didn't do anything at the plate," Huemmer added. "Give credit to Mike Sobol for that. He pitched us outside and did a good job of getting ahead in the count with his off-speed stuff."Ferguson finished with two of Mishawaka's five hits, while Schuster (5-3) fanned four and walked four in his six inning stint.

Clay has a busy day ahead of them today when it travels to Riley at 4:30 p.m. and then comes back to Clay Field for a 7:30 p.m. makeup game with St. Joseph's.
