Clay Baseball - Senior Year

Well, we started the baseball season off with a BANG - beating Warsaw 13-3 last night. Kind of got a little lump in my throat when I got out of my car and saw No. 7 standing in center field - just seems like yesterday he was playing little league and now he's a senior in high school.

He had a lot of support in that first game - Carrie was there with Nolan, Grace and Jack - Colleen and Ben - Bob and I - Chrissie and her boyfriend Brock (who just happens to be Riley's JV coach). Brock has helped Kevin a lot this past winter - much to the dispair of Riley's Varsity Coach. Guess we'll see if that comes back to haunt him on April 12th when we play Riley.

Has It Really Been Three Years?

Found this in my "archives" and can't believe it's really been three years. When I look back on that time of our lives, it all seems like a blur...

This Knight Looked Like He Was Wearing Shining Armor

COMMENTARY By BILL MOOR South Bend Tribune Columnist

U.S. Marine Bobby Knight of South Bend has plenty of support just from his family. In front are Kelli and Kevin. From the left on the couch are Katie, Carrie (Urbanski) holding Nolan, Patty, Bob and Colleen. Another sister, Chrissie, is away at college. Tribune Photo/DAVE WITHAM

Yellow ribbons are tied around the flowering plum tree in Bob and Patty Knight's front yard ... an American flag hangs from their garage ... and a care package already is assembled atop the kitchen counter in the Knights' South Bend home.Their pride swells; their hearts hurt."How can something that makes you feel so proud also make you feel so bad," Patty asks. She is the mother of seven Knights, including one in shining armor. Or at least that is how her son Bobby looked to her last week when he bid his family farewell in his United States Marine uniform."All we know at this point is that he is at Camp Pendleton in California and that his unit will soon be heading to somewhere in the Middle East," Patty says.

Bobby Knight -- yes, he heard all the "General" jokes about his name back in boot camp -- is a member of the Marine Corps Reserves Engineer Company B of the 6th Engineer Support Battalion. The South Bend-based unit was activated for up to a year a few weeks ago as part of Operation Enduring Freedom.Bobby, 25, is a graduate of LaSalle High School, a delivery truck driver for Bonnie Doon Ice Cream and a former volunteer basketball coach at Corpus Christi, his old grade school in South Bend.He could be the kid next door to any of us. Yet he may soon be up on the front line -- or clearing the way for the front line -- in our next war.

His five sisters -- 27-year-old Carrie Urbanski, 23-year-old twins Katie and Colleen, 19-year-old Chrissie and 10-year-old Kelli -- along with kid brother Kevin, 15, all keep him in their prayers."He told me I shouldn't be scared for him," says little Kelli, a fifth-grader at Corpus Christi. "I am trying not to be.""If the others in the military are like Bobby, then we are in very good hands," says Carrie, a fourth-grade teacher at Monroe Elementary School.

Bobby Knight loves being a Marine, while serving as a heavy-equipment operator for his engineering unit. "They kiddingly call themselves 'Uncle Sam's Construction Company,''' his mother says.During past summer camps, he and his comrades have been to El Salvador to build a medical facility, to Honduras to build a school and to South Korea last summer to build roads and get their taste of combat training."I think the Marines have given Bobby a new direction in life," his father says."It definitely has changed him," Patty adds. "He has gone to these countries and has seen people with nothing but still be as happy as can be. So when he goes back to his own house and sees all the things he has, I think it makes him appreciate it even more."And want to help more, too.Even on the homefront.

When his sisters need a hand, he becomes the go-to guy after they call. And now he is answering his country's call."They actually told him back in July not to make plans for the holidays," Patty says. "So we were very grateful to have him through Christmas and New Year's."I do know he is ready," she continues. "Four years ago, when he went off to boot camp, he admitted he was scared to death. But not now. He says he knows that he and his unit can do the job."His family is in awe of his resolve and how the Marines have helped mold him into a man.A few weeks before Christmas, Bobby and two other Marines came to his sister Carrie's classroom at Monroe to pick up presents that her students had brought in for the Toys for Tots campaign. She could hardly believe that this was the kid brother who used to pull her hair.

In 10-year-old Kelli Knight's fifth-grade class at Corpus Christi, they already have written letters to Bobby."What makes that even more special is that the teacher, Mrs. (Janet) Pethick, also was Bobby's fifth-grade teacher," Patty says.Like many other young men and women in the military, Bobby Knight has his support group back on the home front.Godspeed to all of them.Bobby left South Bend last week with homemade blueberry muffins in one hand and a rosary from his youngest sister in his other. His mother nods. "Family and faith -- that's how we will get though this next year."

Grace in Charge...

Our Gracie will be two in another month and here she is - showing her little brother Jack and her cousin Ben just who's in charge. These two little guys are CONSTANTLY getting kisses and hugs from her. If they could ONLY defend themselves!!!

One of these days, they'll both be bigger than her, but for right now - Gracie's in charge!

Bureau of Motor Vehicles Nightmare....

I was in an accident on December 8th, 2005. In February, I received a Certificate of Compliance notice from the State of Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles. My insurance agent filled out the notice (showing that I was insured on the date of the accident) and returned it to the State on February 16 and I go on with life.

Over the weekend I get a notice from the State of Indiana that my license has been suspended due to no insurance on the date of the accident. This morning I call the State of Indiana and they inform me that they have all of my information for a 2000 Lexus - BUT, the police officer at the scene of the accident wrote on the police report that I was driving a 2005 Lexus - which as far as the State of Indiana is concerned is not an insured vehicle.

Now, I'm insured on a 2000 Lexus and I'm registered on a 2000 Lexus - so the State is "trying" to get a supervisor to overide the suspension and make me legal again. I am patiently waiting for a return phone call from the Bureau of Motor Vehicles.

I just want to be LEGAL!!!!

Sensation Cruise

I've been home just long enough to unpack our suitcases, do some laundry and start to repack Kelli's suitcase. This time next week, she'll be heading to Florida with her best friends Maggie Coleman and Elizabeth Wilber for a Spring Break cruise aboard the Carnival Sensation. I hope Maggie's parents realize what they're getting into with these three teenage girls on a Caribbean Cruise!!! Grand Turk and Nassau will never be the same!

All I know is that her new cruise wardrobe cost me more than the cruise and airfare combined. Just don't tell her dad!! Posted by Picasa

American Idol

OK - I admit it - I'm an American Idol Junkie!!! Last year, I rooted and voted down to the wire for Bo Bice and he finished second. So, here I go again - rooting for the "rocker" boy - Chris Daughtry. I know that there's a lot of talent out there, but I'll be casting my vote for Chris until the end. The judges LOVE him, my girls and I are all in his corner, and hopefully America will be too.

ROCK ON CHRIS!!!!!

Design Team Assignment

My most recent Design Team assignment for PIT - the new baby line by Daisy D. Helps that I have plenty of new baby pictures!! Posted by Picasa

No More Braces...

Two years ago, life was pretty rough for Kelli Knight - braces and glasses. Her sisters kept telling her that before she knew it, the "appliances" would be gone and she'd turn into a beautiful swan. The glasses were replaced with contacts last summer, and the braces were removed two weeks ago. I took this photo of her last week and realized that her sisters were right - we have a "swan" among us. Posted by Picasa

Spring Break 2006 - Team Travel

Forty eight hours ago I was basking in the Florida sunshine. Today, I'm back at work with a balmy 38 degrees outside my window.

We flew out of Chicago Midway in the early morning hours on Friday, March 10th and by afternoon we were in our shorts. Sunshine and warm weather does so much for the spirit!!!

Besides traveling with my 14 year old and 26 year old daughters, we added an Athletic Director, an Assistant Coach and eleven players. I have now become "Mama Knight" to eleven new "daughters". By Sunday, we had added a carload of boyfriends to the mix - faithful fans who drove all the way from Michigan.

It was a fun week, full of sunshine and softball - friends and family. Just what I needed!!!!

Spring Break 2006 - St. Patrick's Day

Well, we started the afternoon with an exciting come from behind win!!! The same team who couldn't hit yesterday came alive this afternoon!!! Then, we turned around and faced the AWESOME team from Iowa. As of Friday, our record is 5 and 3.

Once I could see that the second game was not going to be pretty, I hopped in my car and headed back to Melbourne to spend St. Patrick's Day with my brother and sister-in-law at Meg O'Malleys. Felt like I was right here in South Bend on a home game weekend - complete with bag pipers. The green beer was flowing and the Irish band was playing in the street. Lots of fun and MUCH CALMER than Bike Week!

Spring Break 2006 - Melbourne Beach

While the team practiced for their upcoming games, Kelli and I spent the day on the beach in Melbourne. It was just a beautiful day - warm sunshine and temps in the 80's - but the water was still COLD!!! Not that it matters to Kelli. She won't step in that water past her toes - her shark phobia.

Now, this is from a kid who's dream in life is to become a Marine Biologist. Sometime in the next few years she's going to have to meet this phobia head on!

Spring Break 2006 - Cocoa Beach and Ron Jon

After some early morning games on Thursday, we took the team to downtown Cocoa Beach for a shopping excursion at Ron Jon and some fun on the beach - as these pictures show. They needed a little cheering up - seeing that they lost two 1-run games that morning. As of Thursday, they're record is 4 and 2.

Spring Break 2006 - Universal Studios

Wednesday was our "day off" - no games. So, after winning two the night before, we treated the girls to a day at Universal Studios and Islands of Adventure in Orlando. My brother, sister-in-law, niece and nephew also drove over from Melbourne and met us there for the day.

The team did Islands of Adventure, but Kelli and I chose to do the Universal side with our family. Kelli's favorite was the MUMMY and her least favorite was JAWS (but that's just because she hates sharks). As for me, SHREK 4D was my favorite and I really enjoyed TWISTER too.

For dinner, we met up with the team and 23 of us visited Jimmy Buffet and Margaritaville. What a great way to top off a fun day!!!

Spring Break 2006 - Sea World

Kelli and I woke up on Tuesday morning ready for a day of fun. The team was sleeping in since they weren't scheduled to play until evening - so Kelli and I hopped in our rental and headed to Sea World for the day. She had never been, and it had been years since I had been there. It was one of our best days of the trip.

We visited the Dolphin Nursery, where we saw moms and babies. At the Dolphin Encounter, Kelli was able to pet and feed the dolphins. We were also able to see a 4 month old baby killer whale - born at Sea World in November - birth weight was 350 pounds. He was just the cutest thing - swimming along right beside his mom.

We watched the Dolphin Show and (our favorite) the Clyde and Seymore Show (seals and otters). Kelli laughed through the entire show!!

Somehow we ended up in the SOAK ZONE for the Shamu Show and they warn you numerous times that you WILL get wet. Did we listen?

Close to the end of the show, they bring out this MONSTER Killer Whale - 200o pounds - largest in captivity. His sole purpose in life is to swim slowly around this tank and splash us idiots in the SOAK ZOME by slapping his tail in the water. And let me tell you - that water was ICE COLD!

Spring Break 2006 - Cocoa Expo

Our girls played 10 games at the Cocoa Expo over a 6 day time frame. All of the games were double headers. Add to that a cloudless sky and temps in the 80's and I have now found the way to achieve a perfect Florida tan (or burn as some of the team found out). We didn't need a beach - 20+ hours of softball will do it for you. They ended the week with a 6 and 4 record (losing two games by one run). The other two losses came to the same team (a Division 1 team from Iowa that made us look like little leaguers). WOW - they were good!!!

It was so much more relaxing to sit there and watch the games knowing that I didn't have a daughter pitching or catching, or coming to the plate with two outs and the bases loaded! Now, I have one just coaching. Easy, huh? Well on Monday morning - approximately 4 hours prior to game time, she was ready to throw up. She was more nervous to coach than she ever was to play. Once she got that first win under her belt and a phone call from her dad and former high school coach, she was in much better shape and ready to tackle the rest of the week. By Tuesday night, we were 4 and 0.

Spring Break 2006 - Daytona's Bike Week

After arriving in Cocoa, the team spent two days on the practice field, so Kelli and I drove to Melbourne to spend the weekend with my family. While Kelli bonded with her grandmother, I somehow ended up in Daytona Beach (for an overnight excursion) with my brother, his wife and their friends for Bike Week. Now, let me just say that I was totally out of my element!!! I don't drink beer - a nice glass of wine, some Smirnoff, a little "chick" cocktail - that's me. Well, this was a BEER DRINKING CROWD!!!! Now, add to this THOUSANDS, and I mean THOUSANDS of Harley Davidson riders - old and young, and then just the curious onlookers (like us).

For every ONE great looking woman (scantily clad - I might add), there were 200 overweight biker chicks wearing something they NEVER should have been wearing!!

I'm not kidding when I tell you that one woman was wearing a red thong on the OUTSIDE of her jeans. I did take a picture of that one!

The majority of the photos I took can not be shown on this website, so just trust me to say that most of it was pretty disgusting. (I'll try and find a few, just to give you an idea - but let your imagination run wild - and you'll be right there!!)

Now, THIS is What I Call a DRINK!!!

A fresh coconut, some pineapple and a little RUM and VOILA!!!

Our first night in St. Thomas - November 2002.

THIS TIME TOMORROW...

...we'll be soaking up some FLORIDA SUNSHINE!!

(of course - I'm not looking forward to that 3:00 a.m. wake-up call).

The Baby of the Family.....

Those of you who are the baby of the family may not agree with this and those of you who have younger siblings will TOTALLY relate. Kelli Knight is the youngest of seven children and the older six will tell you RIGHT NOW that she is spoiled rotten. As her mother, I don't think we "spoiled" her, I think we were just wore out!

So, as most of you know, she's going on a cruise in 3 weeks - Bahamas, Grand Turk over spring break with her best friend and family. This trip has been in the planning since Christmas and all of us "non-cruisers" in the family can't believe her luck! As for me, I could only dwell on the fact that I was going to get away NOW and spend the next 10 days in Florida - 82 degrees and sunshine (the forecast for this weekend in Cocoa Beach). I'll be traveling with my daughter Katie (the coach) and her college softball team for a spring break tournament. I also knew that because a walk-on had quit the team, there was now an extra ticket available. So, last weekend the Athletic Director approaches Katie and asks if her little sister (I use that term lightly since Kelli towers over Katie) would like to go as the bat girl?

Now, Bob and I have never (in 9 years of grade school) taken Kelli out of school for a vacation. She's in the final three months of her 8th grade year and her grandmother (who she hasn't seen in four years) lives 20 miles from the tournament site. For me, it was a no-brainer and her father agreed. Add to this a very supportive principal and teacher - and Kelli is now traveling to Florida with us on Friday.

Needless to say, Kevin (18 year old high school senior and baseball player who is practicing 5 days a week) is having a COW!! "She gets EVERTHING."

So, Kevin and Bob and Rigby (the dog) will be doing the "guy thing" for the 10 days. I'm sure Hacienda and McDonalds will know them by name!!
